The ALS association is a charity dedicated to raising awareness and funds to search for a cure for Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, commonly known as ALS or Lou Gehrig’s Disease. This fatal neurological disorder affects everyday motor functions, leading to paralysis and potentially death. With no known cure, researchers are steadily looking into treatments that can improve quality of life for those living with ALS.

The ALS association is supported by pop-rock band Girl Pow-R to bring awareness to their cause through the power of music. Girl Pow-R’s song “The Signs” advocates for listeners to recognize and respect red flags in relationships, as well as to take a stand against any type of injustice.

The song “The Signs” advocates a powerful message to draw attention to their cause and motivate people to educate themselves on what it’s like living with ALS.

The band Girl Pow-R is reminding us to pay attention to the signs that matter and appreciate those who help us recognize them. When living with ALS, there are red flags that we often ignore, and Girl Pow-R is giving us direction on how to live our lives with awareness of these signs.

So, what are the signs of living with ALS?

Early symptoms of living with ALS include muscle weakness, twitching or cramping in the arms and legs, slurred speech, difficulty swallowing, and weakness in the face muscles.

As the disease progresses, people living with ALS can experience difficulty breathing on their own due to weakened respiratory muscles. As nerve cells die, people living with ALS eventually lose the ability to move their arms and legs, as well as control their facial expressions.

Other signs of living with ALS include excessive fatigue, difficulties in speaking and writing, changes in voice quality, difficulty holding objects or picking things up, a lack of coordination, and a general feeling of weakness.

We can take action in our own way to make sure those suffering from ALS don’t have to go through their illness alone. The ALS Association is the perfect platform to make a real difference in the lives of those affected by this disease.

The lyrics “can’t go through the pain / pretending’s just a shame” can speak  to the difficulty of living with ALS and how there can be a negative stigma attached for those who don’t understand. While the context of the lyrics can differ, the message behind it still applies to many situations of life: we must not be ashamed of who we are or let situations define us. Even if we are living with ALS, we should never give up hope.
