Creating relationships with others can be hard, yet when you factor in whether or not you are someone who grew up in the foster care system or became adopted when you were younger, the challenge seems to be surmountable. When you grow up without family support, trust in others, or no parents, you deal with feeling anxious, having uncertainty, and feeling helpless in their lives. Children’s well-being suffers as they are unable to have stable and reliant support in their life, therefore making it difficult in creating relationships with others.

For those who grew up in the foster system or became adopted, we do not know what challenges they have faced in their lives. Some trials they may have faced include feelings of abandonment, neglect, and lack of care in their life. For children, these challenges can become monumental as they have to learn to become independent from a young age and learn to care for themselves. As a result, they end up worrying about things they should not have to worry about until they are an adult. It can be scary to have this lack of stability with no family support or people caring for you. Going through life as a child with no creating relationships is an insurmountable challenge a child must face. This can force a child to go through life without forming true connections.

It is important for foster and adopted children to feel a connection and be able to start creating relationships. Marginalized children are in the most need for connection and be cared for due to their circumstances. While it may be scary, the aim for children is that they feel connected, have support, feel cared for, and loved. Children naturally want to be active and move, as our bodies were created to not be inactive all day long. Dancing is a way that can help children connect with their bodies, be active and feel alive, and boost confidence. It has been proven that dancing is beneficial for children’s health, as it improves balance, spatial awareness, fitness, agility, and flexibility.

An activity like dancing can be useful for foster and adopted children, as it can be a fun event to allow them to be kids and hopefully forget their worries. Children can further learn social skills, how to interact with others, and confidence in being themselves, as dancing has the ability to empower individuals.  Dancing can be a way to create bonds and relationships, but it may be scary to be the one to put yourself out there and have fun while dancing. So find a friend or go by yourself and start dancing.

Girl Pow-R believes that you can start creating relationships through the power of dancing as demonstrated through in their song “Let’s Go Dancing”. Because Girl Pow-R understands the benefits of dancing and how fun it can be, they encourage everyone to go out dancing and be willing to try something new. Children can have fun while they dance and can learn about themselves. By putting yourself in new situations and being willing to say yes to new, but albeit scary things, new bonds and relationships can form.
