Girl Pow-R believes that you “leave your trace” with everything you do, and it’s in your power to decide what kind of “trace” or difference you want to make.

This catchy phrase from the single “Galaxy’’ is a powerful example of how music and art can encourage people to create healthier relationships with our planet.

Inspired by the idea of “community-centered conservation” popularized around the world by one of the most famous conservationists Jane Goodall, the group believes each of us can help save the planet in the following ways:

Encourage creativity over consumption

When people build an emotional connection with the environment, they care. With lines like “All this power that you carry / It’s so extraordinary,” Taking Girl Pow-R’s empowering message further: rather than sharing someone’s content and commenting on it, we should try creating experiences that are more rewarding and encourage others to do the same. You can do it by simply spending more time outside and exploring the amazing natural areas in your closest parks and beaches.

Speak Up

Using your voice is one of the most powerful tools to get people to make positive changes. You don’t have to speak to the people in charge. Talk to your friends, family and neighbors about how they can help save the planet by making wise choices in what they do each day.

Shop smart

Do you usually think about what you buy and where you buy it from? Shopping less will not only save you money, but it will also reduce waste and your environmental impact. By buying eco-friendly goods, which are less harmful to the environment, you encourage companies to source and make their products in a regenerative way.

In Tufts Now, Jane Goodall offers three questions to ask before buying a product:

  1. Did it harm animals?
  2. Did it harm the environment?
  3. Is it so cheap because of unfair wages or forced labor?

If the answer is yes, skip buying it.

Stay hopeful

The US artist Morley once said, “If you’re reading this, there’s still time.” When people think about the daunting scale of challenges our planet faces now, they often feel hopeless. They think they can’t save the planet. But imagine what could happen if, instead of keeping the regular flow of our day, each of us made little changes to shift the direction of the planet! With lines like “It’s time to conquer / You can’t wait longer” and ‘Going on a journey, are you ready? / It’s never too early, see what you can be,” Girl Pow-R encourages everyone to start contributing to a healthier planet right now and avoid regretting that we never got the world we deserve.

Stay informed

Staying up to date will make you better prepared to take positive action and have those conversations with the people you want to influence. Take advantage of Jane Goodall Institute’s library to educate and inspire yourself to spark action in your community and save the planet together.
