The University of Toronto unveiled new research about individuals recognizing sound, in particular human nature’s sound biases. The research is headed by Christina Vanden Bosch der Nederlanden, an assistant professor at the University of Toronto Mississauga.

“A lot of my research has shown that, even from four months of age, our attention is biased to pick up the human voice if there are different sounds playing,” said Vanden Bosch der Nederlanden. Considering this new information, we can understand why lyrics add much more to music than something to sing along with. Although instrumentals in music are important for setting the atmosphere of the song, lyrics act to draw our attention to it.

This new research implies that other sounds will be toned-down compared to songs that use the human voice because “people are wired to hear human voices over the din of daily life”. Understanding human nature’s sound biases are important because it helps us understand why songs that use the human voice can be more engaging than others that do not. Engaging with lyrics can often make songs feel a lot catchier, especially paired with a captivating instrumental.

Girl Pow-R aims to engage with audiences with fun instrumentals and of course even catchier lyrics. The group’s newest song, So New features mesmerizing pop beats that transport you into a world filled with endless happiness and fun. The beats are certainly fantastic, however, the group has even better lyrics, “we used to stay up late and dance all night, it’s time to find out what’s next in life, no matter the path — we’ll be alright.” The unforgettable lyrics cannot help but draw your ears in!
