A new school year can mean new challenges, which can lead to a lot of stress for students.  These seven steps will not only help control your stress, but also help you succeed in the classroom.

Many kids and teens are once again being challenged with learning new ideas and enhancing their critical thinking skills (whether it be online or back in the classroom). While receiving an education is essential, there is also a sense of pressure as students often have a mentality that they need to ace every assignment and exam handed to them in order to be seen as a, “success in the classroom.” Which, can lead to an increase of stress. Here are some ways that you can reduce your stress as a student:

  1. Get Organized and Manage Your Time Wisely

This is an important skill to manage in order for you to have enough time to study. Make sure that you have an agenda and/or a calendar to mark down when a test or assignment due date is coming up so that way you are able to plan how many days you have in advance to study or get that project done in time!

  1. Understand your Learning Style

One thing to keep in mind when it comes to succeeding in the classroom is that not everyone learns in the same way. Some students learn through audio, while others learn through visuals. In order to succeed in the classroom, it is important to know what form of learning you gain information best from in order to master study habits that will benefit you in the end.

  1. Have a Good Environment to Study in

Make sure you have a soothing environment, so you are able to study stress free! Playing classical music (or any soft or lo-fi music) or aromatherapy are great ways to help your brain focus. Also, put the devices away! Unless you are using your laptop or phone for your work, make sure to put a timer or a browser block that will help you not procrastinate.

  1. Get to Know Your Instructor

Speak to your teachers! They are there to help you achieve your goals. Set up a time before or after class (or even lunch) to discuss certain concepts that you are misunderstanding; this is an important step in succeeding in the classroom as not only will they be happy to go over that one lesson again with you, but they will appreciate you coming in for help.

  1. Get Some Sleep

To succeed in the classroom, sleep is so crucial to have. You need to maintain at least 8-9 hours of sleep in order to function and regain the information that you have learned from the days before.

  1. Participate in Extra-curricular Activities

You are only in  school once, so enjoy it as much as you can. When it comes to succeeding in the classroom, having extra-curriculars on your record will benefit you in your college/university applications. Joining a club that suits your interests will help you unwind your stress and also help you make new friends who have the same interests as you.

  1. Grades Aren’t Always Everything

While good grades are important to have in order to pursue higher education, it is okay to fail every now and then. Grades do not determine how smart an individual truly is, as everyone excels in different subjects. Don’t look at a low grade as a disappointment but instead, view at it as an opportunity to improve your skills. This will help become successful in the classroom. It is still the beginning of the year, so they will be more tests and more projects that you can work on in order to improve yourself.
