The quality of care a child receives directly impacts the rest of their lives and society at large. Millions of children across the globe are without proper care, which has a disturbing negative impact on development and humanitarian goals.

Children have the right to learn, play, develop and grow under safe and stable conditions.

Despite these needs, millions of children worldwide are without proper care, a situation projected to escalate further due to factors such as urbanization, migration, conflicts, and the effects of climate change affecting communities worldwide.

Girl Pow-R’s song ‘Slam’ speaks to the hurt felt when betrayed by those you expect to support and love you. ‘Slam’ highlights how some people take advantage of the vulnerability of children.

Due to their dependence on others for survival, millions of children across the globe are abandoned and abused physically, sexually, and mentally. There are situations where children have been abused in their homes by parents or relatives, forced into early marriage and child labour.

The vulnerability of kids prevents them from being able to protect their interests; therefore, they need advocates. The second verse in Girl Pow-R’s ‘Slam’ emphasizes the need for the government, communities, and individuals to fight for children’s rights: ‘Powers all mine, you crossed the line.’ Children are given a chance for survival as institutions begin to understand the need to protect children from abuse.

In ensuring the rights of children are protected, the World Health Organization’s Target 16.2 of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development (a collection of 17 objectives designed to help sustain the planet and ensure peace and prosperity for all people) highlights a need to “end abuse, exploitation, trafficking and all forms of violence against, and torture of, children.”

Improving the care of children requires action from all parts of society. As the first verse in Girl-Pow-R’s ‘Slam’ rightly puts it: ‘It’s time to take your bow, cause the end starts now.’ It is time to fight against anyone taking advantage of the children’s vulnerability.

It is up to us to demand that governments, international institutions, businesses, and communities make the care of children a political and financial priority.
