Child hunger has become an increasingly pressing concern in recent times, and it is not immediately noticeable. At Girl Pow-R, bringing these issues to light is extremely important, and it is a huge part of what inspires the music.
Hunger is a global problem that every country is struggling to deal with. According to the statistics of Canada’s Canadian Income Survey, about 1.4 million children suffer from hunger as it continues to be an unfortunate issue for many Canadian families. Although the government has made progress in ending hunger since the 1980s, there are still many families who struggle.
So, what exactly is causing this crisis? It is really important to understand why the issue of child hunger continues to persist despite all the programs created to aid lesser privileged people. One reason is the rising cost of groceries due to inflation. According to Global News, the cost of groceries has increased as high as 10% in recent times, and inflation is predicted to reach 7.7% in May. This has led many families to live in fear of being unable to combat child hunger in their homes.
Another reason is due to low household income. Many families do not make enough money to adequately feed not only themselves but their kids. The cost of housing has been steadily going up. This has led many families to sacrifice eating to still have a roof over their heads.
Girl Pow-R’s “The Signs” engages the message that we should notice things, always be observant and never turn a blind eye to people around us. This is because when we notice things, we can take action and improve the world, one little step at a time.
Understanding the cause of child hunger is very necessary because now we can look at how to solve it. The first and foremost thing to do is the look at the signs all around us. Anybody could be struggling in silence and you’d never know unless you looked closely.
We can observe our friends, neighbours, workmates etc and see if everything is all right at home. Even a little help goes a long way. Of course, you don’t have to stop there, you can donate to shelters, or even take matters into your own hands and go out there with a food casserole and help out.
