Eating right is the basis for a healthy living and wellbeing. It is necessary for maintaining a healthy weight, enhancing growth and development, and meeting your body’s nutritional needs.
It is important to eat the appropriate amount of calories and not take in too little or excess of what your body needs. According to NHS, It Is recommended that men consume about 2,500 calories a day (10,500 kilojoules) and women about 2,000 calories a day (8,400 kilojoules).
You should try to eat a balanced diet, to provide your body with the required nutrients.
Here are some tips on eating right and healthy living:
- Eat whole grains or higher fiber starchy foods – like potatoes with their skins on, whole-wheat pasta, bread, brown rice. They are healthier than refined grains linked to many diseases.
- Consume lots of fruits and vegetables: Fruits and vegetables are associated with a reduced risk of diseases including non-communicable diseases. Fruit juice should not be used as a substitute for fruits as they are high in sugar, compared to fruits that are generally high in fiber and do not spike the blood sugar levels.
- Decrease intake of saturated fats and sugar – too much-saturated fat can increase your cholesterol level, thereby making you more susceptible to non-communicable diseases. Saturated fats are in foods such as fatty parts of meat, sausages, cakes, pies, butter, and so on. Lean meat should be eaten instead and unsaturated foods- like vegetable oils and avocados. Sugary foods are usually high in energy and can contribute to weight gain. Sugar is in packaged foods such as alcoholic drinks, biscuits, sweets and chocolate, and pastries, and so on.
- Drink lots of water – 6-8 glasses of water are recommended per day to keep the body hydrated. It is pivotal to healthy living and has many health benefits such as regulating body temperature, boosting skin beauty, waste removal via sweating and urination, and weight loss among others.
- Get physically active – it is crucial to overall health living and wellbeing, reducing the risk of many diseases.
