First-time Juno nominees Girl Pow-r on embracing social causes with their music

new2

TORONTO — Several weeks after teenage pop group Girl Pow-r learned they were nominated for their first Juno award, they’re still reliving the thrill of the moment.

Dressed in matching pink and orange jackets, the group was huddled together at a Toronto television studio in late January for the splashy reveal of who was contending for trophies at the country’s biggest celebration of Canadian music.

Hundreds of other musicians and industry players were also in the room to see who’d be heading to Saskatoon for the big show.

Girl Pow-r had a hunch they might be among the nominees for children’s album of the year — they were invited to the event after all — but nothing was certain until their name flashed on the screen.

“It was like a scene out of a movie,” recalls Kalista Wilson, a 15-year-old member of the group.

“You could hear a pin drop almost — at least in my mind. My heart was pounding. And then we heard our name.”

The girls let out an elated scream that turned heads across the room.

EXCLUSIVE: All the Winners of The 2020 Juno Awards!

JunoAwardNew

Sure, you could wait until March 15 for the 2020 Juno Awards to be “officially” presented at some arena in Saskatoon in an endless ceremony hosted by Alessia Cara (who also has the most nominations — wow, what a totally crazy coincidence!). But screw that; we’ve all got better things to do. So I’ve gone through the list of nominees and picked the winners based on a minimum of research, a bunch of vague whims and whatever snarky thought happened to pop into my head. Now we can all put this annual national nightmare behind us and get on with our lives. You’re welcome. Unless you lost, in which case, tough titty. Anyway, enough with the quippy host banter.

AND THE WINNER IS: Avril Lavigne — for the second year in a row! No, seriously; she beat out most of these people in 2019. It made no sense then, either. So a repeat makes just as much sense now. Then again, Alessia Cara is hosting. And Justin Bieber could sneak in the back door (so to speak) if his upcoming album is any good. Well, OK, not good. We know it won’t be good. But kids are stupid and have no taste. So really, you never know.

Girl Pow-R Inspire Fans to “Never Let Go” of Who They Are

Toronto-area popster supergroup Girl Pow-R have released a brand new single with an important message to their fellow female fans: “Never Let Go” — available now!

“The song is based off personal experiences a lot of us girls have faced. Being on Instagram and seeing all of these icons and role models having ‘perfect lives’, and going to school and seeing other kids wearing makeup, it’s hard to be yourself or feel accepted when you don’t do the same.”

“You feel like you have to change who you are to please others.”

“Our inspiration was about when you’re forced to be someone you’re not, and how we stand above it!” adds bandmate Krisalyn, who adds that she too has personally gone through situations like those discussed in the song lyrics.

Powerful Female Toronto Artists: Past & Present

OFFICIAL GIRL POW-R PHOTO - AUGUST 2019
Female groups and artists in the past that focused on feminist issues were mostly middle-aged adults, as many used their past experiences as the base of their songs. In 2019, this has changed and the younger generation is largely contributing to issues that are presently occurring in today’s society.
Pop- rock girl group Girl Pow-R has done exactly this and are inspiring youth their age with songs about current topics that are extremely prevalent. The group members mention that their music touches on the “struggles that young girls face in their daily lives and how they can overcome them” such as in their original song titled Krisi, which is “about how a young girl was consumed with how she looked on the outside, and how she was perceived by others [but] she forgot what’s on the inside.”

Since its inception the group has been vocal in its support of different social causes, going as far as releasing their debut single (back in November of 2017) during Ontario’s Bullying Awareness and Prevention Week (during which the girls spoke at the anti-bullying forum held at Cardinal Ambrozic Catholic High School). Powerful Female Toronto Artists: Past & Present

841205693_orig

Being an all-girl group is important to Girl Pow-R, as they state: “I have noticed recently that there are not enough positive influences for children and teens to look up to.” They believe their music “can be an outlet for people to listen to that lifts their spirits” which is their goal and they state that they want to “inspire others through the lyrics in our songs and through the messages in our social causes.”

Today, we have a lot of artists and singers who share their experiences of being in love, finding themselves, and discovering some unknown truths of life.
